A Message from NAMSAP President Rita Wilson

By: Rita Wilson
Chief Executive Officer

Dear NAMSAP Members:

I am honored to serve as president of NAMSAP for 2018, and to work with our board of directors, advisory council and membership to advance NAMSAP’s mission of advocacy, education and leadership in all aspects of MSP compliance. 2017 was an incredible year for our organization, with the release of NAMSAP’s partnership with REDBOOK, the development of our own MSCC certification training program and the first steps toward access to the Official Disabilities Guidelines (ODG) for our membership. 2017 also brought national attention to NAMSAP as we openly challenged CMS to modify its review process to follow evidence based medicine to address long term opioid use in the MSA. With the foundations laid by last year’s leadership team, NAMSAP is positioned to achieve great things this year, both for our membership and for all stakeholders in our industry.

One of the key strategic goals for 2018 is to leverage the collective knowledge of our members and their willingness to share expertise by creating the NAMSAP Speakers’ Bureau. As an adjunct to its use internally to support NAMSAP webinars, NAMSAP Advisor newsletter content and NAMSAP’s Annual Educational Conference, this service will extend NAMSAP’s expertise outside of our organization. This places NAMSAP at the forefront of the MSP industry in its ability to disseminate accurate and relevant education in a timely manner without the financial burden of travel, expensive registration fees, etc. I encourage each member to consider how you might participate in the NAMSAP Speakers’ Bureau.

With education at the forefront of our mission, I’m pleased to announce that NAMSAP, through the efforts of the Education Committee, plans to host 11 webinars in 2018. The first, Looking Ahead to 2018, will be presented on February 27, 2018 by Dan Anders, Esq. (Tower MSA Partners), Rasa Fumagalli, Esq. (NuQuest), and Ciara Koba, Esq. (Burns & White). Look for the announcement and registration information in the next week and make plans now to participate. Other webinar topics slated for 2018 include:

·      WCRC Transition to New Contractor

·      Dual Coverage & Special Needs Trusts

·      Opioids in the MSA – Part III

·      Medicare Part C

·      REDBOOK

·      MSA Cost Mitigation Strategies

·      Case Law Update

·      Official Disabilities Guideline – How, Where and When to Use?

·      LMSA Update

·      Annual Ethics Update

A second strategic objective for 2018 is to further NAMSAP’s advocacy to limit long term opioid use in the MSA by building a coalition of national organizations in support of our position regarding evidence based medicine. Under the leadership of Gary Patureau and Amy Bilton, the EBM Committee is aggressively seeking to extend national awareness of this issue through communication with national organizations and legislators, and also via direct dialogue with CMS. Toward that end, I am pleased to announce that the National Council of Self Insurers (NCSI) and the American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners (AANLCP) have joined NAMSAP in support of the use of evidence based medicine in CMS’s review of opioids in the MSA. We hope to add other national organizations to our coalition in 2018, and to work in aggregate to affect a change in the WCRC’s review process.

Continuing our focus on timely education, the Annual Conference Committee plans to announce this week that the NAMSAP 2018 National Educational Conference will be held in Baltimore, MD on October 2-5. The venue selected for this year’s conference is the beautiful, historic Lord Baltimore Hotel. A Save the Date reminder should arrive by end of week with details regarding the agenda, hotel, etc. As the agenda continues to be tweaked and speakers contacted, we anticipate participation by CMS and its newly implemented contractors, by legislators who are leading our charge on opioids, and by our own member experts from both the payer and service provider communities.  We will also proctor the MSCC test for those who have completed NAMSAP’s MSCC course within the required period of time prior to the conference date. Please make plans now to join us in Baltimore and take advantage of the Super Early Bird Registration discounts.

As the only non-profit organization dedicated to the MSP compliance, NAMSAP is uniquely positioned to drive change in our industry through collaboration, advocacy and education. Our 2018 Strategic Plan is dedicated to this purpose. With so many initiatives underway, however, NAMSAP’s ability to ‘move the needle’ on any issue is completely dependent on the active involvement of our membership. The December 2017 issue of NAMSAP Advisor provided a comprehensive list of all NAMSAP committees, including leadership, mission and a brief description of the 2018 goals for each. I encourage everyone to explore the committee options, find your place in NAMSAP and jump in!

As you can see, 2018 is going to be an incredible year for NAMSAP.  To our members, I look forward to working with each of you to achieve our collective goals, and to see what can be accomplished through the focused efforts of this talented organization. If you are not yet a member, I assure you there is no better organization than NAMSAP to keep you abreast of MSP issues, and no better time than today to become an active participant. In the words of Vincent Van Gogh,

Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.
